An appellate court is a court that is empowered to hear appeals regarding the decisions of a lower court, such as a trial court, administrative agency, or other tribunals.

Appellate litigation is the act of bringing a decision from a lower court or administrative agency to a higher court with the objective of having the decision reversed, set aside, or remitted back to the court below.

Bringing a case to an appellate court allows for an objective review of the evidence, judgement, and reasons to determine if the decision of the lower court should be upheld or varied.

Appellate courts, in general, do not re-hear cases. They instead look for legal errors made by the court below them.
