What is a Criminal Record?

A criminal record is a record of all convictions and non-convictions (such as discharges, withdrawals, and dismissals) associated with an individual’s name and fingerprints.

What is a Canadian Pardon?

A Canadian Pardon (also known as a “Record Suspension”) allows an individual with a criminal record to have their criminal record permanently “sealed” from visibility in the national criminal record database. With a Canadian Pardon, no one will be able to view your criminal record unless they receive written permission from you or the Public Safety Minister of Canada to do so.

A Canadian Pardon will seal the entire criminal record; you will not be able to choose which convictions or non-convictions will be sealed.

Who grants a Canadian Pardon?

The Government of Canada is responsible for granting Canadian Pardons.

What are the Benefits of a Canadian Pardon?

A criminal record can negatively impact your life in a multitude of ways. A criminal record can make it more difficult for you to find a job, get a bank loan, travel abroad, do volunteer work, immigrate, get custody of a child and more.

A Canadian Pardon reduces the negative impacts of a criminal record by having your criminal record removed from public access. The option to seal your criminal record from public visibility is a unique opportunity for affected Canadians, as the majority of individuals with criminal records elsewhere in the world often live with the consequences of their criminal record for the rest of their lives.
